Kuldip Nayar, one of the politicians killed in the serial blasts, had allegedly warned the government that there was a possibility of terrorist attacks. Officials believe that he was unhappy over the lack of progress in investigation of his allegations.
In November 2007, MQM legislator Farooq Sattar, his wife and a child died in a bomb blast at their home in Budhan Shah Kotwali area of the city. This was said to be revenge for the attacks on Imambargahs and the killing of Naqashbandi.
In 2007, a huge blast occurred in the water tank located in Qadam area, from where a portion of the blast emanated. Investigations revealed that the explosives were bought from Pakistan and stored in the tank.
In 2008, the Dawoodi Bohra group targeted an event of the then Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah. In 2011, a bomb blast near an Imambargah in Karachi killed a police officer and injured two other people. The blast was allegedly carried out by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. In the month of September 2011, a suicide attack was carried out at the Umerkot Gate of the MNS National Council Office in the MNS headquarters.
Jihadist organisation Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ) was involved in the planting of bombs at the Youhanabad market in the Dehri-e-Ghouchi section of the city and the Jojra police station in the neighbouring Hanjarwala, in 2008. About 75 people, including doctors, were injured in the blasts.
In October 2013, 35 people were killed and over 100 were injured when a bomb exploded in a crowded market in Karachi's Shujabad area.
Karachi is a hub of terrorist organizations. In the past, the city has suffered a series of attacks. From November 2005 to July 2008, over 200 people were killed and over 1,200 were injured in a series of bombings mostly carried out by sectarian outfits, including Sunni sectarian groups such as TTP, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi and Sipah-e-Sahaba.
